Allergies are the fastest growing, chronic conditions in Australia, with over 4 million Australians reported to suffer from at least one allergic condition. This number includes allergies to foods and drugs, as well as asthma, allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and eczema. Of these conditions, allergic rhinitis is the most common allergic disease in Australia!

The naturopathic approach
Besides symptom relief it is important to manage the underlying histamine excess in the body and to address the immune imbalance, which allows the allergy to take hold in the first place.
It is important to identify and remove allergy triggers, if possible, whilst helping to modulate the immune response to prevent further sensitisation. To achieve this, naturopaths employ dietary, nutritional and plant-based strategies to support the immune system, gastrointestinal health and downregulate the allergic response.
There may be some benefit in ensuring patients have sufficient levels of vitamins C and B6, as well as zinc and copper – nutrients which support DAO enzymatic function, the enzyme which helps break down histamine in the body and which is often found impaired in people with allergies.
The Buteyko approach
Histamine levels and immune responses are both negatively influenced by chronic over-breathing and carbon dioxide loss.
Resulting blood pH changes increase susceptibility to immune challenges, and the increase of histamine levels in the blood result in hay-fever and airway constriction. Besides contributing to greater allergy susceptibility, smooth muscle surrounding the airways and blood vessels constrict, resulting in the development of asthma or bronchial problems.
The best way to interrupt this vicious cycle and manage allergies better, is to retrain your breathing with the help of Buteyko Breathing and stop the excessive loss of carbon dioxide.
