Naturopathic Philosophy
Naturopathy is defined as a philosophy, art and science of healing which assists the self-recuperative processes of the body and the maintenance of health. The term covers therapies such as:
- NUTRITION (diet, vitamin & mineral therapy)
- HERBALISM
- HOMOEOPATHY
- ENERGETIC REMEDIES (flower essences, tissue salts)
- TACTILE THERAPY (massage, reflexology...)
- HYDROTHERAPY
- COUNSELLING
- STRUCTURAL ADJUSTMENTS by approprietly qualified practitioners
Life -Force
Naturopathy believes in an inherent life-force, which is present in all living things. It is responsible for the constant effort of the body to self-clean and self-heal. It corrects imbalances and repairs injuries, returning the body to homeostasis (internal equilibrium).
This force is at work for instance, when a cut or broken bone heals. Your injuries heal without you having to will your body to do so.
It is also at work during more serious and chronic illnesses. However, it can be impeded by our unhealthy lifestyle, dietary deficiencies, a restless mental state and lack of rest, amongst other things.
As a naturopath I am trained to encourage this life-force to do its job by advising the patient about better lifestyle choices and by assisting the body in the healing process primarily with herbs, homoeopathy and nutrition.
Body, Mind & Spirit
Naturopathy is always mindful about the fact that we are body, mind and spirit. It realizes that we are more than just physical beings with 'broken-down' parts, which need to be fixed. This is why a well trained naturopath will take time to explore all dimensions which may be contributing to ill health.
The root of the problem
Naturopathy does not concern itself with mere symptom control to eliminate pain for instance, but it tries to find out how and why and where and when things first went wrong. This is why a naturopathic consultation should always allow sufficient time for a thorough health assessment interview.
