Question:
What happens during Buteyko Breathing classes?

Answer:

I run the classes slightly different to other Buteyko practitioners. The changes I made are based on my experience of teaching for the last 6 years.

Being taught by a naturopath means that the prospective Buteyko patient has the opportunity to attend a thorough naturopathic assessment appointment before commencing the classes. During this assessment appointment I take a health history especially in regards to the respiratory or asthma history. I also explain the method's theoretical basis and point out the commitment needed by the patient to succeed.

The 6 Buteyko classes themselves are held over a period of 3 weeks, with the 1st session being held on Monday, 2nd on Tuesday and 3rd session on Thursday of the first week. The classes of the second week are held on Monday and Thursday and the last class is held one week later on Thursday. Each class goes for one hour.

The idea behind this schedule is that at first I need close contact with you to make sure you follow instructions closely and practice correctly. As you get better you are left to your own devices for longer and longer periods.

I like to conduct small classes with usually no more than 3 people to a class. This gives time for individual attention but also for the opportunity of learning from each other. However, children's sessions are held on an individual basis, at the moment, with the parent present during all sessions.

Each class contains a 20-30 minute segment with actual breathing exercises and the rest of the time is devoted to learning about various aspects affecting breathing, such as diet, exercise, medication etc.

Fees are paid 'as you go', there is no 'up front' payment.  The initial assessment consultation is charged like any other naturopathic assessment consultation. Payment is required at the conclusion of the consultation and if you are eligible you may claim back some of the costs from your private health fund.

The 6 Buteyko classes are charged individually and payment is required at the end of each session. However, should you want to pay by credit card I ask you to make two payments only. One for the first 3 sessions, due at the end of the first session and the second payment for the last 3 sessions, due at the end of the third session.

You might be elligible to claim back some of these fees from your private health fund.
